The Zube Tube received wide-ranging national recognition when it was first presented a little over 10 years ago. Good Morning America, Newsweek, and The Washington Post called the Zube Tube the "Toy of the 90's" and likened it to the Hula-Hoop. The Zube Tube was even selected by Parents Magazine as one of the Best Toys in 1990 (November 1990). Since the Zube Tube hadn't been manufactured for some time, Deissler recently decided to put physics aside for a while and start his own company, The Ultimate Cosmic Toy Company, Inc. to re-introduce the Zube Tube.
Like the Hula-Hoop, the Zube Tube is very simple in concept, yet seems to appeal to all ages. Consisting of an acoustic coil strung between two plastic resonators within cardboard tubing, it is capable of producing a variety of unusual sounds, without electronics or batteries, by shaking it, twisting it, plucking it, or talking/singing into it.
The Zube Tube has been used by educators when teaching about sound, and serious musicians have also taken note: Recently, Deissler received a request for Zube Tubes to be used in a performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Columbus, Ohio, October 1999. He has created the web site zubetube.com which contains audio and video files showing the Zube Tube in action.
Dr. Deissler, who has worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and NASA, has lectured around the world on the subject of pattern formation in nonlinear systems. He first came on the idea of the Zube Tube while a student at Case Western Reserve University. During a physics course, he noticed that a Slinky touching a styrofoam cup produced an amplified and very unusual sound pattern. Soon after, he experimented with a different type of spring and realized that he had something interesting.
